The first batch of pulp from UPM Uruguay’s new pulp mill sets sail for China

UPM and Saga Welco AS have announced that the first batch of pulp from UPM Paso de los Toros pulp mill has been successfully loaded at the new UPM deepwater pulp dock in Montevideo and set sail for China.

The Saga Faith cargo ship carrying approximately 50000 tons of UPM eucalyptus pulp set sail on May 26th and is expected to arrive at its destination in 47 days.

On May 23rd, the UPM Montevideo Port Pulp Terminal held a loading ceremony to witness this historic moment. The Minister of Transport of Uruguay, Jos é Luis Falero, attended the ceremony.

The UPM pulp terminal located in Montevideo Port began operation in October 2022.

This professional and reliable pulp terminal operates 24 hours a year, with an annual operating capacity of over 2 million tons of pulp and a total of 80 ships. The terminal has 100 employees and 200 people participate in the operation during loading and unloading of cargo ships.

The terminal also includes a large warehouse with an area of more than 50000 m2, including control room, logistics space and office, which can store 150000 tons of pulp. UPM operates the pulp terminal as a long-term franchise operator for 50 years.

This $240 million terminal is an important component of UPM’s cumulative $3.47 billion growth investment in Uruguay.

In addition to the dock, UPM’s investment in Uruguay also includes the Paso de los Toros pulp mill, which began production on April 15, 2023, as well as investment in local facilities in Paso de los Toros.
